Did you know turmeric, the bright yellow spice that is often used in Indian cooking, has many health benefits? Experts believe that turmeric supports the liver and regulates blood sugar. It also promotes wound healing.
Many people find turmeric useful in managing joint pain and improving their cognitive function. But more importantly, it has shown to be an effective remedy for numerous digestive conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and leaky gut.
What Makes Turmeric Work?
Curcumin, the main component of turmeric, is responsible for many health benefits. Curcumin, an antioxidant, targets free radicals created by the body's oxidation process. Oxidative stress is when free radicals exceed the body's ability to combat them. This stress can cause changes in the body's lipids, proteins and trigger a variety of human diseases and conditions. Curcumin neutralizes freeradicals, relieving oxidative and inflammation stress as well as cell damage.
Researchers have also discovered that curcumin is powerfully anti-inflammatory and can help relieve symptoms of leaky gut. This condition can be present in a variety of digestive conditions including:
- IBS
- Crohn's Disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Acid reflux
In one study, patients suffering from ulcerative colitis, which is an inflammatory condition of the colon or rectum, were given curcumin, curcumin plus anti-inflammatory medication or a placebo plus anti-inflammatory medication. Curcumin treatment resulted in a 4.7% rate of relapse compared to the 21% rate for patients who were treated with placebo.
Another study of 207 IBS sufferers who had taken curcumin (turmeric extract) for eight weeks showed that curcumin reduced IBS symptoms and pain. Although it was a small study it is believed that turmeric can help IBS sufferers, especially those suffering from inflammation of the GI tract.
